My name is Bill and I am a senior in College. I have been
officiating football now for 6 years. In those six years, I have officiated
pee-wee, JV high school, varsity high school, JV College, and varsity college
football. Beyond my personal experience of officiating, my dad has also been an
official for much longer than I have been alive. As a kid growing up, I would
always watch my dad's football games on TV and talk to him after the game. My
dad has taught me more things about officiating than I may have learned in a
whole career of officiating football. However, many new officials do not have
the experience of growing up around officiating.
Being a current football official who started very young, I
understand first-hand what it can be like to start something new that you have
never done before. Especially as an official where you have many eyes
constantly watching and waiting for you to make a mistake. I have seen many
young officials get scared off from pursuing officiating because parents or
coaches yell at them constantly and they don’t want to deal with it. I have
seen young officials who have no idea what they are supposed to be doing and
are scared to ask because the average age of officials might be quite older
than a young official. I have been that official that has been yelled at and
thought, is this really for me, and the official that sits in meetings and is
lost because everyone else knows everyone else and is talking in almost their
own language. However, we desperately need younger officials. In many areas,
officiating in all sports is deeply lacking a younger generation to help fill
vacancies being left open by an aging officiating class. This is leading to
schools becoming desperate to find any official to work for them.
With that said that there are many openings for officials of
all ages to get involved and help out their local communities, I want to use my
experience, and help you learn the skills necessary to be prepared to take the
field and better prepare to help you be the best official possible. This will
help you be successful at officiating and move up the football officiating
ladder.
I have helped numerous young officials decide to officiate
and help them be successful in their first year. I have also given football
officials advice on how to make the leap from high school to college football
and how to move up the ranks in college. While I have given these people advice
through conversations, I now want to write this all down to help other
officials have more opportunities to progress and succeed.
